History and Geography:
Standing along the picturesque Chitral River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, the Chitral Fort stands as a testament to centuries of history and architectural grandeur. Originally serving as the barracks for the guards of the Mehtar of Chitral, the fort became the personal property of the last ruler after the merger of Chitral State in 1969. Today, it is inhabited by the ceremonial Mehtar, Fateh-ul-Mulk Ali Nasir, who undertook extensive renovations post-2015 earthquake, breathing new life into the old Darbar Hall and staterooms. In 2022, a massive river overflow washed away the famous Chinar Tree on the front of the fort. The fort and its surroundings are increasingly under flooding threat due to unprecedented increases in the river flow during peak summers.
