The city serves as a hub for trade and commerce between the regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and neighboring areas. The City is also famous for its salt mines, which have been in operation for centuries and are among the oldest in the world. The city has a diverse population, with Pashtun being the predominant ethnic group, and the local culture is deeply rooted in Pashtun traditions and customs.
The region’s natural beauty is enhanced by the nearby mountains, forests, and agricultural lands, making it a peaceful and scenic area. Kohat also has a historical importance as a military and administrative center. Its proximity to major cities like Peshawar and Islamabad makes it strategically significant. With its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, the city is a unique and charming destination in Pakistan.
It saw many ups and downs in history. The Sikh built a fort here, which was modified by the British and stands magnificently in the heart of the town. On one side of the fort are the famous Jangal Khel springs, with banyan trees around. Just out side the fort are a boulder, well and hill-gah (meditation place) associated with Hazrat Syed Abdullah Haji Bahadar Kohati (RA). He lived in the times of Aurangzeb Alamgir, and his shrine is located inside the city.
There is also a grand mosque near the shrine. The shrine of another Holy man, Hazrat Bona Pir (RA) is situated north of the town at the foot of the hills and is visible from miles away. There is also a perennial spring near the shrine. Kohat Pass is a strategic gateway to the region.
