DARRA ADAM KHEL
Darra Adam Khel is the arms manufacturing town of the Tribal Areas, located 40 kilometres south of Peshawar on the road to Kohat, a drive of about an hour. To visit the gun factories, foreigners need a government permit but you can drive through Darra Adam Khel by bus or car.
The permit is free and issued while you wait, but you should get it the day before you plan to visit.
Darra arms factories fired up in 1897. In return for turning a blind eye to this local enterprise, the British were guaranteed safe passage along the main roads. In any case, the British believed it better that the locals have inferior weapons of their own making than stolen British-made guns.
