Ghulkin Hunza

Ghulkin Hunza is a bowl-shaped village of Gojal Hunza situated 3 Km from the KKH near Gulmit. Since this village is not visible from the ‘Karakruram Highway’ therefore it is still a virgin and unexplored. The village has an extended territorial presence that connects four glaciers (Gulmit Glacier, Ghulkin Glacier, Passu Glacier, and Batura Glacier) and also houses two peaks (Sishper Peak and Passu Peak). The only brackish water lake in the region (Borith Lake) also lies in Ghulkin vicinity.  The commercialization has not yet affected the traditional way of life and culture and it connects you in a way with the cultural richness of the historical Hunza.

Ghulkin Hunza occupies the site of an old glacier-fed lake that has been silted up over time, creating a charming circular arrangement of traditional dwellings. The village offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers, including KKH to the east, Ghulkin Ghar to the west, Putoondas Glacier and Peaks to the north, and Ondra Poyga Gulmit the south.

The climate in Ghulkin Hunza is characterized by long, cold winters with temperatures below freezing. Summers are comparatively milder, with temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Celsius. The harsh winter landscapes are transformed into a winter wonderland, making it an ideal destination for winter travelers.

This village is surrounded by ‘Gulmit Glacier’ on one side and ‘Ghulkin Glacier’ on the other side. It is a village where the wildlife and domesticated life go together as the same habitat is shared by both, and both stay in harmony. The local community has tried to keep Ghulkin as an ecologically friendly place. Here the local volunteer organization GLAD (Ghulkin Local Agency for Development) facilitates the tour operators and tourists in maintaining the eco-friendliness of the village. Once at Ghulkin, you have a range of trekking options to enjoy your trip. Patundas pasture track to the Passu Peak/Shisper Peak base camp is the most thrilling and adventurous one.
